You and Your Skin

Acne, blotchiness, and redness, are not just skin dilemmas. It just might be that you’re body is trying to send out signals that an illness or infection might be invading your body.  “Our skin can reflect what’s going on inside our body,” says dermatologist Anne Chapas, M.D., of Union Square Laser Dermatology in New York City. “As part of the immune system, the skin defends against environmental factors. But when your body is fighting an ailment, it can get overwhelmed and things like acne and redness can show up.”

A lot of people think they are past the stage of getting face acne, but in all reality there are

other things that can trigger acne besides puberty. Chin acne is common amongst adults, especially women, right before their period. This happens because the chin is particularly sensitive to progesterone and testosterone. Other deep cystic acne on the chin can be a result of hormone imbalance which can lead to diabetes or infertility. To get rid of chin acne, maybe it’s time to call up the ob gyn. Eating a diet high in vegetables and fruit, as well as reducing sugars and oils, may also reduce hormone imbalance.

For those suffering from dark circles underneath your eyes and puffiness, it’s not just a sign that you might be a little sleepy! The culprit: Allergies.  Chronic allergies tend to dilate blood vessels and can cause leakage, which leads to puffiness and that dark hue. A lot of people don’t notice that they have allergies and are even suffering. Seasonal allergies are not the only thing to be worrying about if you have an allergy problem. A lot of house hold items, dust, mold, and animals can trigger the release of histamine, a chemical that is known to make your eyes itchy and puffy. There are many over the counter products to help get rid of your allergies all together such as Claritin, Allegra, or Zyrtec. If those don’t seem to be working, contact your health care provider for other options.

Allergies and acne are not the only skin dilemmas. Redness and blotchiness can actually be signs of a more serious illness. Stress, digestive disorders, and even lupus can be the cause of these weird rashes. Lupus, a rash shaped similar to a butterfly, usually covers the top and middle of both cheeks. This is a classic symptom of the disease that attacks the immune system. If you’re feeling more tired than usual, are bruising easily, and are losing or gaining weight, take a trip to your doctor ASAP! As for stress and digestive related skin problems, stay away from the sun and spicy foods, these can add to the redness and blotchiness! Also try to get more involved in activities can that reduce stress such as yoga or some sort of mediation, maybe take a trip to the spa! To regulate your digestive system, try taking probiotics. Probiotics is healthy bacteria that helps regulate your digestion and can also calm inflammation. Try eating more yogurt with live cultures if you aren’t interested in taking any vitamins.

Overall, a lot of these skin problems can be naturally cured if you eat healthy balanced meals and get enough physical activity. Stay away from a lot of sugars and oils that can cause the release of harmful chemicals and can make your skin oilier. What is happening on the inside of your body is usually happening on the outside!
