Like a lot of us, trying to lose weight, we try to stick to the same schedule of dieting and exercise daily. After waking up you eat a small breakfast consisting of orange juice or coffee, your favorite cereal, and eggs. You spend about 45 minutes to an hour at the gym, doing moderate to vigorous exercise. Since you don’t have enough time during the day to cook your meals, you’ve already planned to take to work with you a protein bar, a frozen lunch, baked chips, a diet soda, and some fruit. After a long day at work, the last thing you want to think about is cooking dinner. You grab a fast and easy box dinner from your pantry that’s only 400 calories per serving and for your vegetable, you cook up frozen broccoli. You’ve done well throughout the day, no sugar, no regular soda, you’ve counted up your calories right. You jump on the scale after two weeks of diet and exercise, and you are stuck at the same weight. What’s the deal? You’ve been counting your calories, eating healthy, and exercising almost daily, why aren’t you seeing results?
Often times, exercising and counting calories just aren’t enough. Since we are eating foods that are pre packaged or frozen, we are also eating a ton of unhealthy preservatives, oils, and sugars without knowing it, and that prevents our bodies from being able to burn fat properly. Who is to blame? No, not you, the food industry. They disguise sugars and oils as healthy foods, but if you were to look closely to the labels you would see that your morning orange juice is filled with sugars and preservatives.
Next, your addiction to coffee and diet soda. We all know that sugar is your number one enemy when it comes to losing weight, so who would’ve thought that a zero calorie soda, with no sugar added, could prevent you from trimming the inches around your waist! Truth is, a lot of zero calorie sodas are often tainted with artificial sweeteners. So, whoever told you that artificial sweeteners were going to be your best friend to the next four to five months was lying. Artificial sweeteners are loaded with preservatives and harmful substances actually making it harder for your body to break it down. Too much sugar in your diet can lead to high blood sugar, which can lead to certain diseases, and cause the body to store fat. To sum it up, you might as well start eating regular sugar again, after all, they are both equally as bad for your body.
Now that you’re starting to realize why you aren’t seeing results, let’s break everything down even more. Let’s talk about your protein bar and your baked chips. Yes, eating baked chips might make you feel better about not eating greasy fried chips, but in all reality they both have hydrogenated oils in them. Same goes for your so called “healthy” protein bar. It might be loaded with protein, but could also be loaded with some questionable oils and preservatives.
Eating all of these preservatives takes a toll on your body, and even more on your liver. You’re liver works hard to break down fat. When it is working even harder to filter our harmful substances, breaking down fat becomes even more of a challenge for your hard working liver. Now, can you see why eating a lot of artificial sugars, oils, and preservatives are bad for your body, and are actually working against you and successful weight loss?
You’re wondering if there is anything you can eat. Of course there is! Try to stick to foods that only contain one ingredient such as, chicken, fresh veggies, fresh fruit, 100 percent whole wheat, and much more. You don’t have to be afraid of oils and fats, you’re body needs natural fat to burn fat. That being said, you can find good fats from real butter, olive oil, eggs, nuts, and avocados. Good carbohydrates such as sprouted grain bread, brown rice, oatmeal, and sweet potatoes will help accelerate fat burning in your body. Always read the package labels. Avoid products that include artificial sweeteners, hydrogenated oils, stay away from margarine, processed soy products, and substitute fake butter. Be careful when you are picking out orange juice, dressings, whole wheat products and much more, often these products have hidden sugars in them. Remember, when you are reading the labels, if you don’t recognize what’s in the product, most likely your body doesn’t either.
It’s not just all about counting calories or how often you are getting physical exercise, it all comes down to the types of foods you are eating. Know the foods that cause accelerated fat burning in your body, and know the particular foods that are preventing you from burning fat. All it takes is a few extra minutes at the grocery store to read the package labels. So next time when you step on the scale and you see the numbers getting smaller, you will realize that you don’t have to work as hard to start seeing results.
